On our last trip to Bangalore (last week), among all the meeting we had, we met the founder of Fresh to Home: Shan Kadavil.
Shan told us that the non veg market in India was growing at 25 % per year. But even more suprising was that around 80 % of Indian people were non veg! From my experience this stat is a little easy to twist, anyway it is still an interesting indicator.
Also, it was hard few years ago to find in India some fresh fish or meat, with no conservative (including ammonia, very bad for health) next door at a decent price. That is where Fresh to Home found his space.
Fresh to Home is  a managed marketplace that is disrupting the supply chain of non-vegetarian perishables in India. It is India’s largest branded fresh fish company. A very impressive business already.
Among the interesting tricks they have achieved, is to propose an app to fishermen with no text but only pictures to send to their data base. They can also thanks to AI, buy at a better rate across the different harbours in India…
They have already raised a couples of millions USD and are about to raise much more soon (we can not display the precise figures)

Alibaba’s travel services platform “Fliggy” has added duty-free shopping section “Fliggy Buy”, which provides consumers detailed product information including buyer reviews prior to international trips. Chinese travelers can purchase a range of products, including cosmetics, suitcases, bags, and alcohol, and retrieve the goods after arriving at their destination. Attracting Duty-free and tax-free stores to the platform will be the priority during the first phase of Fliggy Buy’s launch as well as diversifcation to luxury goods and consumer electronics.
Chinese tourists accounted for $115 billion in spending on international trips in 2017, average spend for Chinese travelers going overseas grew 9% year-on-year in 2018. Definitively, no retail segment is ignored by Alibaba. After this week announce of entering (again) EV car hailing service with Suning & Changan, and Suning itself (owned at 20% by Alibaba) entering staffless movie theaters retail, what’s next ?!

Apple disclosed this week its new services, now displaying a large variety of content : it already had apple music (more than 56 millions paid customers at the end of 2018), it now comes to the news with News+ offering unlimited access to papers and magazines, AppleTV+, a kind of Netflix-like, the game with Apple Arcade (a hundred free games after you take a subscription), a credit card with incentive cash back…
3 facts regarding this news :
Services are key, even for product manufacturers, they represent 12% of all revenues in the last quarter
By offering new services mostly only to its products (iOS or MacOS only), Apple tries to keep customers inside its ecosystem, it can be a dangerous strategy
Only one service really is available right now (and only in the US), all the others are scheduled later this year, with no price point : Apple seems to bu urged to show its game and it might be bad news for it.
